Eira Thomas is a Canadian geologist whose career in the Canadian mining industry spans more than 25 years.
Ms. Thomas spent 14 years with Aber Resources (now Dominion Diamond Corporation), serving as a geologist between 1992-1996, and is credited with leading the field exploration team that discovered Diavik, Canada’s second diamond mine in 1994. She served as Vice-President Exploration for Aber between 1997 and 1999 and as a Director of the Board from 1998-2006.
In 2001, Ms. Thomas co-founded Stornoway Ventures Ltd. with Catherine McLeod Seltzer (now Stornoway Diamond Corporation) and served as CEO of Stornoway until 2008 and Executive Chairman between 2008 and 2011. During her tenure at Stornoway, the Company acquired Ashton Mining of Canada by way of a hostile takeover and consolidated ownership of the Renard diamond project from the Quebec government before advancing the project through to a bankable feasibility study. Renard has subsequently been developed as Quebec’s first diamond mine.
Ms. Thomas served as President, CEO and Director for Kaminak Gold Corporation between 2013-2016 and advanced the 5+ million ounce Coffee Gold Project in Yukon, Canada through bankable feasibility study and into mine permitting. In 2016, Kaminak sold to Goldcorp for approximately $520 million.
In 2007, Ms. Thomas founded Lucara Diamond Corporation, with partners Lukas Lundin and Catherine McLeod Seltzer, and worked to acquire the AK-6 deposit in Botswana, which was later developed as the Karowe Diamond Mine in 2011. Karowe is known for its consistent recovery of large, high quality diamonds, including the 1109 carat Lasedi La Rona, the second largest diamond ever recovered in the world. In February 2018, Ms. Thomas assumed the roll of President and CEO of Lucara Diamond Corporation.
Ms. Thomas is currently a director of Suncor Energy Inc.
