Woman of the Year of Consumers Choice Awards

Pamela Martin is a pioneer for women in journalism in British Columbia. Currently, liaison to B.C. Premier Christy Clark and Director of Engagement for the BC Liberal Party, she worked most of her career as a tenacious television journalist, anchoring numerous award-winning newscasts in British Columbia.

The year was 1976 and her trailblazing for women had only just begun. She began her career at CHEK TV in Victoria where television news had been dominated by men. The following year, she crossed the pond to Vancouver and went on to become the first female “beat reporter” for the top-rated radio station News Talk 980 CKNW.  She subsequently joined BCTV as the first female anchor of a major six pm newscast.

In 2001, Martin joined CTV as anchor of  “ CTV News at Six” and with Martin at the helm, the broadcast won numerous awards including Best Newscast of 2010 RTNDA, an International Edward R. Murrow award and in 2006, the RTNDA National Award for Best Spot News Coverage.

In 2008, Martin was awarded the National RTNDA Award for Best Feature Story on breast cancer, called “Kelli’s Red Devils.” In 2003, she won a Leo Award chosen by viewers as favourite on-air news personality.

In 2010, Martin anchored the national Olympic newscast for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver not only winning numerous broadcasting awards, but running with the torch as well.

Ms. Martin has chaired the United Way of the Lower Mainland and Canadian Cancer Society campaigns, and was a board member of The Looking Glass Foundation, Pacific Autism Family Centre and the International Film Festival. She presently serves on the board of the Face the World Foundation.
